KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL: United Sports fought their way into the semifinals of the 123rd IFA Shield snuffing out Kalighat MS 4-3 via the penalty shoot-out after a goalless full-time at the Howrah Stadium today.
United enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession and kept hammering the rival defence where the Kalighat goalkeeper rose to the occasion time and again to spare his team the blushes.
In the closing stages of the game, Kalighat strung together a series of attacks in a last-gasp effort to force a result in full-time but the United goalkeeper brought off some brilliant saves to take the game to extra-time which, too, turned out barren.
In the penalty shootout, United wasted the first shot but the United goalkeeper made two saves later to make amends and help his team enter the semifianls with a 4-3 victory.
Shubham Das of United Sports was named the man of the match.
