KOLKATA, Dec 09: The Shield journey continued for United Sports as they sealed their place in the knockouts with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over BSS today.

United Sports went into the second half with goals from Sourav Das in the 20th minute and Jagannath in the 31st minute before Safik Ali of BSS pulled one back in the 49th minute.

The Group D match started with both teams stringing together a series of measured passes, cracking open rival defences time and again.  In the 20th minute, Sourav Das gave United Sport the lead, rising above defenders to head in a cross from the left but BSS kept pressing for an equaliser undeterred. United increased the lead in the first half after Jagannath converted from the penalty spot.

On resumption, BSS reduced the margin when Ali scored off a pass. The goal saw BSS launch repeated forays with renewed vigour but a stoic United defence held on to the slim lid to take home full points.

United’s Basudeb Mandi was awarded the Man Of the Match trophy.
